Discovery Semiconductors to Demo 10Gb/S Coherent System with EDC for 300km Metro Systems using AMCC Chipsets at OFC 2009

Ewing, NJ - March 2009

Discovery Semiconductors, Inc. will demo the “Kitty Hawk” 10Gb/s coherent optical OOK system for 300km metro systems using all-electrical dispersion compensation at this year’s OFC (booth #3123). The heterodyne system allows for passive linear electrical dispersion compensation. It is combined with AMCC’s second generation clock and data recovery with integrated EDC (Electronic Dispersion Compensation) to compensate residual impairments such as PMD. The soft decision EDC (AMCC S3394) is used in conjunction with AMCC’s Rubicon-LH enhanced forward error correction (S19227). The OFC 2009 demo shall highlight error-free reception of 10Gb/s data over 300km of standard singlemode fiber with no optical dispersion compensation whatsoever.

“Enabling network operators the flexibility to transmit 10Gb/s traffic to distances up to 300km without adding costly optical dispersion compensation and optical amplification, was a key motivation in our development of the Kitty Hawk coherent system,” said Mr. Jim Rue, Manager of High Speed Products at Discovery Semiconductors, Inc. “Our ready-to-deploy coherent system combined with AMCC’s industry-leading 10G IC technology allows for cost-effective upgrades of 2.5Gb/s to 10Gb/s or new 10Gb/s installations up to 300km. We are very grateful to AMCC for their best-in-class customer support of their commercially-proven 10G EDC and FEC chipsets.”

“We are very pleased and impressed with the 300km transmission results that Discovery has achieved with their coherent system and our S3394 EDC and S19227 Rubicon-LH chipset,” said Mr. Subhash Roy, CTO Transport, at AMCC. “Discovery Semiconductors is an innovative partner who has proven that our 10G IC solutions are easily incorporated into long-haul systems which span well beyond their original target of 100km.”
